THE INFLUENCE OF PERSONALITY AND LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY ON ESL LEARNERS' WORD CONTRIBUTIONS IN FACE-TO-FACE AND SYNCHRONOUS ONLINE FORUMS

Background and Purpose: Recent technological advancements Covid-19 pandemic have prompted more opportunities for online learning. However, there is a dearth of empirical research that focused on high school students. Therefore, this study aims to obtain comprehensive view ESL learners’ involvement or word contributions in ‘normal’ face-to-face situation synchronous text-based environment by relating it their personality language proficiency.
 
 Methodology: In study, quasi-experiment was carried out over four weeks. It involved eight sessions discussions with 48 Malaysian students who were divided into two matched-sample groups. The participants' feedback used support provide insights the findings. quantitative data analysed using IBM SPSS statistics 26 software while participants’ responses session open coding axial strategies.
 Findings: Statistically significant difference found during discussions. Apart from extroverts high-intermediate proficiency, other groups learners are either introverts having lower level proficiency produce significantly words non-face-to-face context forums might lowered anxiety increased confidence interact peers.
 Contributions: Learners’ personalities levels should be considered when choosing discussion setting facilitating activities. More provided less proficient introverted express themselves discussion.
